We headed out of Mexico City, with Nick happily driving away from the chaos and me writhing in the passenger seat, waiting for the antibiotic to work its magic.
We spent the day at Mexico’s 2nd & 3rd highest peaks: the Popocatépetl volcano at 17,802 ft (last erupted in early 2020) and its dormant twin across the way Iztaccíhuatl at 17,160 ft.

Thankfully, we weren’t climbing to the peaks, merely driving the saddle road to take in the vistas. It was quite cloudy at that elevation but we were lucky to get a few glimpses of the snowcapped peaks from time to time. On the way out, we even saw a coyote wandering down the road.
As we headed into the town of Puebla, wouldn’t you know it, the warning light came on in our rental car. Thankfully, there was a rental agency in town and we were able to make an appointment for maintenance the next day and I was able to eat my first meal in over 24 hours…so all in all, not a bad day.
