(6/20/22)
As much as we LOVE Mexico, she has her challenges. We've consistently had bad luck when renting cars here & - with that in mind - made zero plans for the day of our arrival in anticipation that we would need time to deal with & re-strategize any hiccups before setting out. Thank goodness we did! The car rental turned out to be somewhat of a scam with a $1000 surcharge for mandatory car insurance, even though we have documented proof that we already have insurance. So after 3 hours of negotiating/waiting, we were able to return to the airport & book a new rental car with another agency. Which is fantastic, minus the small inconvenience that it's a small, 'beater' of a car & probably won't survive rough roads or rainy weather. But it'll do for now & we'll change/upgrade next week when we return to this part of the country before heading into less developed areas.
After navigating Guadalajara during Monday rush hour, we arrive at our rather nice hotel & deal with the next impending issue: that of our international cell phone coverage not working. This took yet another three hours to resolve but after the 2 of us worked with 2 separate companies on 3 different wifi-enabled devices, we made it work. Or so we hope - lol! We'll see how this goes for the next 40 days 😉
What saved our sanity throughout this entire day was a bottle of water bought @ LAX & some cheese & crackers brought from home (an attempt at cleaning out the fridge before vacation that truly paid off!) - otherwise, the room service that didn't arrive until 10:30 p.m. would have sent us over the edge 😬
So, after an 18-hr day, we'll get some sleep & cross our fingers for good vibes in the morning. ¡Buenas noches!
Image of the day: From the plane, we had a clear view of the Sea of Cortez, a very dry Colorado River, but sadly no vaquitas 😕)
