Road Warriors

(6/26/22)
In a single day, we got up at 4:30am to go birding, paddle out to a waterfall & cenote, then ziplined over waterfalls before ending up at our next hotel at 10pm! A VERY long day, zig-zagging across the region and covering about 200 miles.

We arrived at Sótano de Las Golondrinas around 6:30am to watch a colony of ~2.5 million white-collared swifts fly out of a cavern 1680 feet deep! They emerge shortly after sunrise in a swirling tornado pattern as they ascend from deep inside the cave. We also saw flocks of green parakeets and a Mexican goshawk swooping in to catch the swifts. There are guides at the mouth of the cavern that will strap a rope to you and let you lean over the edge to get a view down inside!

Next, we headed to Cascadas de Tamul, where we rented a lancha to paddle out to 345 foot-tall waterfall, then swim in a cenote (water-filled cave), before jumping out of the boat & floating down some small rapids back to shore.

We unknowingly saved the best for last by ziplining over the Cascadas de Los Micos. We had absolutely stunning views, gliding high above seven different waterfalls, that we wouldn't have been able to see from any other vantage point. We finished the day soaking in the pools downstream from the falls - it was beautiful!
